In the Sounds and Seas: Volume 2
****Note: Some images say "Thumbnail Processing," but if you click to view full-sized you can see all of the images. Thanks for your patience while I figure out this problem.**** "In the Sounds and Seas: Volume 2" is the second chapter of Monkey-Rope Press' ongoing 6-part wordless comic project. Volume 2 picks up with the protagonist who was glimpsed at the end of Volume 1, and follows her back to her workshop where she is building a ship. She is assisted by two builders, a documentarian who builds a model of the ship at each stage of its build, and an escapist, who can briefly leave the world of the island into the in-between space sung by the figures in the first book. The protagonist's plans become clear: she intends to sail and find the singers, and join in their song. * * * The cover was hand-printed by the artist from an original linoleum cut, and the body of the book was offset printed and bound by Salsedo Press in Chicago, Illinois. In the Sounds and Seas: Volume 1
"In the Sounds and Seas: Volume 1" is the first chapter of a six-part wordless, densely illustrated comic that tells the story of a woman’s consuming creative project, and what happens when that fails. In the style of ancient poems of myth and monsters, “In the Sounds and Seas” begins with an invocation to the singers of the story. The book opens with three figures sitting around a fire in the woods and, once filled with song, they open their mouths and the story bursts forth. Their songs weave together and blend, forming the world of the rest of the book. * * * The cover was hand-printed by the artist from an original linoleum cut, and the body of the book was offset printed and bound by Salsedo Press in Chicago, Illinois. In Defense of Common Weeds
"In Defense of Common Weeds" is a hand-printed, hand-bound book made in the spring of 2009. Built around a visual pun, the text in the book celebrates unrestrained growth both in plant life and in creative invention but the text overwhelmed and crowded out by the very growth that it celebrates. As the plants growing out of the “gutter” of the book consume the text space, the self-aware text curses the growth in spite of its earlier praise.
